Methods to Stop Smoking

Methods to Stop Smoking by Ted White

Methods to stop smoking seem to grow on trees these days. With more and more smokers becoming conscious of the negative impact, smoking is having on their lives; there has been a rise in attempts to help these people kick the habit for good. Some are "natural", involving the use of herbal remedies; others are chemicals developed by major pharmaceutical companies. Still more are entirely drug free, relying on will power and community support to tame the beast of nicotine addiction. No matter which method one chooses, there are those that pass with excellence, and those that fall from grace, and must try, try again.
While on the subject of the will power methods to stop smoking, let us talk a little more about just what those are. A broad term for many methods is "quitting cold turkey". Those who choose to quit this way simply put down their cigarette and lighter and never touch them again all their live long days…in theory at least. Aids to this sort of method are audio tapes or CD's that can be listened to either awake or asleep. Books, magazines, and other forms of educational material are also helpful when trying to bolster your will power. Lastly, exercise, a good diet, and some group therapy can go a long way toward making this method to stop smoking all that much more effective.
There are a few prescription drugs out there to assist a smoker in quitting. There are also over the counter drugs and herbal remedies available that will profess just as effective as their competitors are. Talk with your doctor before taking anything you are unfamiliar with, some drugs may have unsafe interactions with your current medications. Chantix and Zyban are two of the most well known stop-smoking drugs on the market today. They profess to help stop or at least lessen cravings as a way to help a smoker quit. Herbal products can vary widely based on the manufacturer, and their specific target goal. Some aim to restore key minerals to the body while the smoker is rewiring their brain and body. Others are patches and pills that contain herbs to flush the nicotine from a smoker's bloodstream that much faster, making recovery more likely. These are known as chemical assisted methods of stopping smoking.
There is almost too much educational material available to a smoker about methods of stopping smoking. Between printed materials like books, brochures and magazines to the vastness of the internet, it is hard to keep up with what is fact and what is some crackpot's idea of a good joke at your expense. This is especially true when it comes to the internet. A simple web search can reveal millions of hits leading to sites that claim to have some or all of the answers. Take these claims with a few grains of salt and decide for yourself, which are best for you. It is your body, your mind, and most importantly, it is your life. Take care of it!
